What is Kaithi script, and how to read old records

Kaithi (कैथी), also called Kayasthi, is an old script of north India. For more than a hundred years, land, court and revenue papers in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh were written in it. Very few people can read it today, so old Khatiyan and Kewala papers need translating to Hindi.

History of Kaithi

The script was linked to Kayastha scribes and clerks, which gave it the names Kaithi and Kayasthi. It was used to write Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, Awadhi and Hindi.

Under British rule, Kaithi was an official script in the courts and offices of Bihar. Devanagari later replaced it, but land records kept using it for a long time.

Why land records are in Kaithi

Bihar's old Cadastral Survey and the later Revisional Survey are mostly recorded in Kaithi. Khatiyan, Khesra registers, Kewala (sale deeds), Dakhil-Kharij papers and rent receipts are often in this script.

These old papers are what people need to claim their land in Bihar's special land survey, and only a handful of people in each district can still read them.

Why Kaithi is hard to read

Kaithi looks like Devanagari but is written without the top line. Many letters differ, vowel signs were often left out, and every writer's handwriting was different.

Land papers are full of old Persian and Urdu terms (rakba, mauza, chauhaddi, lagan, raiyat) whose exact meaning matters.
